AWS Django Kubernetes Python React.js

Open edX / OpenCraft | Full-time | TRUE REMOTE (async/worldwide) | Senior Open Source Developer on Open edX - React, Python/Django, AWS/Kubernetes

Do you care about contributing to open-source, and appreciate a good challenge? We do too! :)

Open-source

We are a team of veteran open-source developers, working on educational and community-based projects in an open-first environment – and we are looking for new members. By joining us, you will work full-time on open-source, pushing your changes to free software projects upstream through pull requests, contributing features, documentation, or help on public forums.

We care deeply about contributing our work upstream. You will see the results of your work reused and recognized across the educational community, increasing access to quality education for everyone, everywhere.

Remote-first

Unlike companies who reluctantly started to accept remote workers recently, we have embraced it from day 1. For the past 7 years, we have based and refined our way of working around remote-friendly workflows, from the ground up. No day-long video meetings, mandatory work hours, or risk of being forced back into an office one day -- as long as you have a good internet connection, it’s none of our business when or where you work from. :)

We are all working remotely, from all continents (except Antarctica, at least so far - applicants welcome!). We use remote-friendly and timezone-agnostic workflows based on asynchronous principles and good documentation practices.

Online education

We are one of the main contributors to the Open edX project, the main open-source MOOC platform created by MIT, Harvard and many other top universities. It powers sites like edX.org, the MIT Open Learning Library, and the national online learning platform for France. We provide development and hosting for institutions like Harvard Medical School, Harvard LabXchange, Cloudera, Autodesk, and several governments. We are not affiliated with edX.org, but we contribute and work with them on various projects.

Our handbook, like much of our work, is publicly viewable and you can find it at https://handbook.opencraft.com/.

Ruby Ruby on Rails

AppLand - Ruby Internals Expert - FT (preferred) or contract - Remote [USA / CAN / EU / UK]

AppMap is one of the world’s leading Autonomous Software Development tools. Thousands of developers already use AppMaps to visualize complex applications and automatically find issues that human code reviewers cannot spot.

AppMap provides the missing data within the software development lifecycle, delivering immediate feedback to developers in their editors that, until now, was only available after deploying to production.

AppMap supports many languages, including Ruby. Our integration hooks into the Ruby VM to record application interactions and functions, and must always do so without affecting its behavior, integrity, or performance. We are growing our Ruby team, and so we need more Ruby experts to help!

There are thousands of Ruby programmers in the world today. But here at AppLand, we’re not looking for any normal Ruby engineer. We need someone who is an expert on the internals of Ruby and how it is interpreted and executed at runtime. Someone who knows the difference between YARV and MRI. Someone who has a commit history within the Ruby core. Someone who has worked on profilers, tracers, or debuggers. Someone who enjoys the world of bytecode as much as they do writing an elegant Rails app.

If you’re that person, please get in touch at Email is hidden. When you write to us, please tell us about the thing that you love (or hate!) most about the internal architecture of Ruby’s implementation.

Gravity | Remote | Full-time | Senior engineers of all stripes (full-stack, frontend, backend). Also, SDRs and AEs.

Gravity (https://gravityclimate.com) is a carbon accounting and decarbonization software company. We help industrial companies track, report, and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Our business is buoyed by tailwinds of climate regulation and private market forces.

Buzzwords: the stack is a Go/Postgres modular monolith, serving a Next.js/React/Typescript client. We use an internal CLI, `gdev`, for all common developer actions. We will keep a low-dependency architecture for as long as possible.

Please contact Email is hidden if interested. (or reach out to me - cofounder & head of eng - for a 15min chat. Email is in my profile). At this time, we are hiring within the US only.

AidKit | Remote | Full-time | https://aidkit.org

AidKit is the engine that non-profits and governments trust to deliver direct cash assistance to those in need. We build & operate the social safety net for people who slip through the "official" ones. We replace convoluted workflows of glued together spreadsheets, bank portals and human tedium with one unified platform to allow organizations that do good to do so faster and more effectively.

Since starting amidst the pandemic, we've distributed over $50M to tens of thousands in hard to reach populations (the undocumented, unhoused, refugees, etc) and are on track to double this over the next year. We're currently running some of the largest guaranteed income programs in the United States.

We're looking for an experienced all-around engineer (frontend & backend) who cares about our mission to bring good software to doing good. You'll work (with me!) as part of our small tech team to make sure our systems stay healthy under massive surges of interest in programs that we run (we went from 0 to ~1000 requests per second in a matter of minutes recently). Our stack is mostly Typescript and Postgres (with some Python that we're deprecating).

We pay everyone in the company $120k and would pay you the same + equity. We're bootstrapped and profitable.

If you're interested, please reach out to me at Email is hidden!

(We consider ourselves a social impact startup <-- trying to make sure people who search for this find this post :)

GitHub GitLab Python Rust

AllSpice | https://allspice.io/ | Boston, MA | Full time | Remote/Onsite | Junior - Principal | rust

As a software engineer you know the importance of a well-established dev ops process with version-control, collaboration, and automated test. Consider that in hardware, we generally review and release new products with pdf, email, and (at best) in-person design reviews. I got so fed up with the inflexible "industry standard" practices that I left my role as an EE manager to build GitHub for hardware development. AllSpice a venture-backed company, unlocking the next generation of smart vehicles, IOT devices, rockets, medical devices, robotics, and much more!

https://techcrunch.com/2022/01/31/allspice-thinks-hardware-d...

We have a highly-capable, tight-knit, remote-first team with a flex office in Cambridge, MA and competitive benefits. We strongly value continuous communication and personal development. See more on our careers page [https://allspice.notion.site/allspice-careers-3173d0cd518b42...]

We’re hiring primarily for:

Backend Engineer (data structures) - Own the complex parsing and handling of hardware design files and associated APIs using python and rust (all new development in rust). Build performance benchmarks to track runtime, and generated file size. See more: https://allspice.notion.site/backend-engineer-data-structure...

[Contract] On Premises Infrastructure Consultant - Support enterprise users with dedicated on-premises installations.

Apply by emailing me (Email is hidden) or Email is hidden with [HN] in the title and a link to your GitHub/GitLab profile and/or resume.

Fanatics Betting and Gaming almost 4 years ago

Fanatics Betting and Gaming | Senior to Sr. Staff level SWE IC roles, and Senior Manager, w/in Data Platform and Integration | REMOTE (US/Canada) | https://jobs.lever.co/fanatics/15a574a3-4829-43b9-bfc2-ee84c... (example listing, for Senior Manager role only)

Fanatics Betting and Gaming (aka FBG, or BetFanatics) is a well-capitalized new venture, within the broad umbrella of Fanatics as a holding company, that is poised to disrupt the existing sportsbook and casino/iGaming markets. Specifically I lead the Data Platform and Integration teams, and we are just ramping up hiring to build the core foundations of our teams and systems, starting with some of our more senior ICs and 1 additional manager hire (with more future roles to come, including more entry-level and mid-career).

We plan to encompass all aspects of an end-to-end data platform, including data lake, data warehousing, analytics and visualization, enterprise reporting, regulatory and privacy compliance, as well as building out personalization (P13N) and other DS/ML platforms (e.g. supporting Risk/Trading functions in-house eventually). We also partner with other teams within Fanatics, collaborating on MarTech and general data activation, and not to mention all the other places where data is needed (Fraud/Trust, Ops, Customer Care, etc.). We don't buy into buzzwords, but we believe in many of the underlying principles and good ideas behind "modern data stack" and "data mesh architecture".

Seriously, just try out the existing options like DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, etc., and see for yourself how customer-unfriendly they are, how unwelcoming the first-time user experience is (especially for any total newcomers to sports-betting), how little personalization or customization there is, and how different it is from the kind of frictionless browsing/shopping/consumption experience you'd expect with modern customer-obsessed data-driven products like Audible or Amazon or Netflix or Robinhood (e.g. one analogy: we'd like to make sports-betting as approachable as Robinhood made buying stock). We deeply believe we can do better, and it all starts with data platforms from the ground up.

And personally, myself and many others within the company are also deeply passionate about what the industry terms "responsible gaming", i.e. building trust with players/bettors via data-driven features to empower players to make responsible decisions (rather than dark patterns focused on squeezing players, or taking advantage of whales, or enabling addictive behavior). We definitely think we can easily "raise the bar" here, compared to industry norms focusing on meeting the bare minimum legal/regulatory standards.

- Tech stack: primarily AWS based, with lots of flexibility in terms of adopting various SaaS offerings (e.g. currently evaluating Snowflake, Databricks, Fivetran, dbt, Tableau, and services like Amplitude, Graphyte, etc.); near-term focus is on building launch-ready MVP data platform, with plans for much more sophisticated features and capabilities over time

- Comp: competitive with FAANG/Big-N tech, with strong base salary, target bonus, private RSUs (for pre-IPO Fanatics stock), and potential for sign-on cash

- Some recent-ish press coverage of Fanatics as a whole: https://techcrunch.com/2022/04/06/fanatics-raises-1-5b-at-a-... , and of Fanatics Betting and Gaming in particular: https://sportshandle.com/fanatics-planning-sports-wagering-e...
