C# Golang Java JavaScript Kubernetes PostgreSQL Python Ruby on Rails Rust TypeScript

Skiller Whale | Software Engineer (Curriculum) | Remote | Anywhere in the world | £30-120k

We’re looking for software engineers to research, write and test our teaching curriculums across many programming languages and technologies. Our salary range reflects the fact that we need a mix of junior, mid-level and senior developers.

Unlike most software roles you’ll be learning and writing on a wide range of languages; you won’t be glued to one software stack. That includes Golang, Python, C#, Javascript and TypeScript right now; next on our list are Java, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, Ruby on Rails and Rust. You’ll need to be fast at learning new technologies. That means more than just a "Hello World"; it means understanding edge cases, gotchas, idioms. It means being willing to test out weird behaviours. Your research is crucial for our learners to understand the full depth of any topic.

You also need to be able to write English fluently and concisely. You’ll demonstrate a close empathy for the trainers and learners who rely on your work. And you should enjoy working with other people doing exactly the same, wanting each others work to be the best it possibly can. You won’t need teaching experience, but you will have a track record in software development, and a desire to advance other developers’ skills first and foremost.

Skiller Whale currently employs 10 people, with 3 more joining soon. We have raised a total of £2.8m funding (mostly recently in January 2022) and are growing 15% month-on-month. As our next employee you will have a huge role to play in shaping Skiller Whale as a company. Our very first in-person meeting will be in Oxford, UK in June 2022. We’d love to have you there!

The full advert and application form is at https://apply.workable.com/skiller-whale/j/31e0bfdb66/ or you can email Email is hidden with your interest.

Either way, you can expect Hywel to get back to you quickly (I joined in March & my first approach was in February. I had 3 × 1 hour interviews, and a 2 hour offline writing assessment).

Who we are Skiller Whale (https://skillerwhale.com) upgrades the skillsets of professional software teams. Instead of passive videos and relying on developers to learn ‘organically’, Skiller Whale delivers 60-90 minute live, hands-on sessions with an expert. We make learning as efficient and intense as possible. Our original material contains challenging coding exercises which our trainers help navigate.

In the long term, we want to move beyond software engineers and become the go-to global provider for professional learning (roughly a $360bn industry).

We try to work in line with our values of openness, rationality, creativity and autonomy. We also want our team to remain diverse and inclusive as we scale, so we would especially welcome your application if you’re part of a traditionally underrepresented group.

Substack about 4 years ago
Android Golang IOS JavaScript Kotlin Node.js Objective-C React.js Swift TypeScript

Substack | San Francisco, CA; New York, NY, and remote in the US and Canada

Help build a better future for writing. We believe that what you read matters and writing is valuable. We’re here to help writers go independent and thrive, and we’re hiring.

We're hiring software engineers for web (JavaScript + TypeScript, Node, React), iOS (Objective-C, Swift), and Android (Kotlin), and data analysts, security & systems engineers, designers, and product managers.

Here's how we think about engineering:

- We bias to action. We work fast, make bold bets, and then course-correct as needed.

- We believe great things are built by small groups of exceptional people. We assemble tight-knit teams and give them clear, ambitious goals and the autonomy they need to succeed.

- Remote Collaboration and Community. The team has a home base in San Francisco, but there’s also an office in New York and some people are remote. We get together a few times a year to build relationships and work and celebrate together. Engineers are autonomous and independent and balance that with highly collaborative pairing sessions, problem solving, and more. It’s a team that celebrates one another.

- Empathy for writers. We do Empathy Hour, Office Hours, shadowing customer support, and find ways to get writers and engineers talking with one another. Substack started by building a product for a specific writer (Bill Bishop writing Sinocism) and we’ve strived to maintain that ethos as we’ve scaled – focused directly on the needs of people.

- Feelings Friday. We’re here to support each other through the ups and downs of a high growth startup.

- Diversity of perspectives. We are engineers with a diverse set of professional and personal backgrounds, and as a result have a working environment that demonstrates a wide variety of skills and knowledge.

- We like to have fun. We have a quarterly hackathon where engineers collaborate to build things they want to see on the platform. Many of the things people build get shipped. (~50% of things from our last hackathon have shipped or will soon)
