Blackbird is a San Francisco based digital software studio that specializes in a Human Centered “Build, Measure, Learn” approach to launching totally new, high-impact software products for a wide variety of public and private sector clients, from early stage startups to Fortune 50 companies. We don’t do marketing sites! We build complex, cool, interactive fullstack web and mobile applications that are fun to build, challenging, and that people use every day. We work directly with brands or through partnerships with some of the top design studios in the world (like IDEO).

Blackbird is very different from most other software studios. We operate in very collaborative and strategic relationships with our clients and partners which gives us a uniquely strategic seat at the table and the opportunity to regularly deep dive into a new interesting understanding of our client's business, then build, launch, and evolve new software products from the ground up.

Our teams include CTO consulting, Software Development, UX/UI, training and capabilities building, and "Build, Measure, Learn" Product Management. We work with large and small companies/startups on projects ranging from 2-12 months with 2-7 people on each project. We build full stack web, mobile, IoT, physical installations, etc. Our favorite stack is React, React Native, GraphQL, and Rails. We also use a wide range of other tech as needed since we face a pretty diverse set of challenges. Recent and upcoming examples: Flutter, .Net, Drupal, Elixir/Phoenix, Swift, and Kotlin.

We are looking for people who are excited about building great software products, who are great teammates, and who are passionate about continuously refining best practices for creating successful digital products. Experience in dev team leadership, new product development, collaboration with business and design stakeholders, and consulting experience are not required but are all huge plusses.

We are a remote-first company but with very active collaboration on video and Slack, plus occasional travel to San Francisco and other locations is part of the job for project kickoffs and other critical collaboration phases or meetings.

Oso | Software Engineer, Developer Advocate, & Eng Manager | New York City (NYC) | Onsite or Remote

Over the last 15 years, companies like AWS, Stripe, and Twilio have helped developers offload anything not core to their apps so they can focus on what matters to their users. Despite a lot of progress in developer tooling, most developers still roll their own authorization.

You might start with something quick 'n dirty – some IF statements and roles in a database, which may not be pretty but gets the job done...until you need to add more features, and more features. And inevitably every team band-aids onto this system until they do a big refactor. This is lost time for an area that's not core to what most companies are trying to solve for their users, and what's more, no one on the team is feeling great about this work.

At Oso (backed by Sequoia), we're building the first batteries-included library for authorization so developers don't have to roll it on their own ever again. We're designing slick APIs to cut down the amount of time they spend getting their system set up, and building a fully-fledged policy engine and programming language (in Rust) under the hood to ensure they can customize their system however they need. We don't have any product managers – the engineers on the team are responsible for taking broad problems, experimenting with potential solutions and shipping a superhuman experience for our users.

The team members who join now will not only have a disproportionately large impact on the product, but also on the culture and future of the company.
